Do Your Characters Take Over The Tale When You Write A Novel?

I've had an interesting conflict with my characters and canon characters because I'm trying to figure out whether the story is being told by me or by the characters.

I realize it's a shock to hear that. But the characters are my friends and family - well, a second family and second friends - and it's typically a pleasant trip after me, and the characters discuss what's going on in the chapter or a spontaneous thought emerges that helps us get through the chapter I'm working on.

In the fanfiction stories I'm writing, my characters and canon characters are there for me. Even in the stories, I'm writing, and they're well-rounded and natural. They have feelings, too, and they know how to express themselves when we disagree. I suppose Frodo Baggins is my love interest, and the character is who I'm referring to adds fuel to the fire.
